The 39 Steps

What a wonderful evening we had at the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick.

Friends mentioned that they had been to see The 39 Steps and that it was a fantastic production. So, I managed to book tickets (there were hardly any left), and we popped up on the last night of the run.

The Theatre was absolutely packed, there wasn't a single vacant seat. Wow! what a production. It had a bit, or a lot, of everything: singing, dancing, acrobatics and lashings of excellent acting.

The show mixes a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, and adds a dash of Monty Python to create a fast-paced whodunit. The original novel was still recognisable, but only just!

This Olivier Award-winning play is packed with non-stop laughs, some good old-fashioned romance and a whole host of colourful characters (all played by a ridiculously talented cast of four). Iconic scenes include the chase on the Flying Scotsman, the first-ever theatrical biplane crash and a death-defying (well nearly) finale. We were amazed at some of the stunts. The whole experience was totally immersive.

Such an evening of entertainment and fun; an excellent end to a lovely Bank Holiday weekend.
