March 22nd and Oscar Wilde

One of my favourite Christmas presents was a Literary Almanac, and I very much enjoy dipping into it and discovering fascinating tidbits.

The entry for 22nd March is:

Cecily breaks off her engagement to Ernest (two months before actually meeting him in person) in The Importance of Being Earnest (1895) by Oscar Wilde. "Today I broke off my engagement with Ernest" she writes "I feel it is  better to do so. The weather still continues charming."

The engagement has been settled for a month and she forgives him before the week is out.

This did make me smile.
