Lewisia

About a year ago a close friend gave us a potted Lewisia. I had not come across the species before and loved the mass of pink, star-shaped flowers on long stems. However, I had no idea what to do with it.

Our friend kept hers in her conservatory but after a week or so I realised that ours was not enjoying being indoors on a window sill and explored whether it would do better outside. It seems that Lewisia is a native of semi-desert areas of North America, so while they are not bothered by extremes of temperature, they do not like being too wet. As we live in one of wettest parts of England I could see this might be a challenge.

I decided to move it to an east-facing (protected) outside window sill and hope for the best. The pink flowers soon fell off but it continued to look fairly happy. So I was delighted when, a week or so ago, it suddenly burst forth with even more pink flowers.

I think it’s enjoying its position and we enjoy admiring it through the window.
