As we were sitting in St John's Church in Silverdale, waiting for The Marian Consort's Pater Peccavi to begin, we looked around us enjoying the beautiful stone carvings. I've known the church for years but hadn't realised quite how beautiful the carvings are. As St John's is Victorian I hadn't appreciated that it is a Grade II* listed building.
Grade II* is applied to "particularly important buildings of more than special interest" The List Entry Summary states that "the interior is unusual for the high quality of stone carving". Pevsner in the Buildings of England series considers that "the carved work ... makes the interior memorable".
The beauty of the building certainly added to our pleasure in the gorgeous Renaisannce music.
