2025 - The Centenary of Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway

To celebrate the centenary of the publication of Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway on 14th May 2025, Vintage Classics has produced a new edition of the groundbreaking novel. This new edition is based on the original publication by Hogarth Press. The dustwrapper features the original art work created for the novel, by Virginia Woolf's sister - Vanessa Bell.

There are currently two other titles in the same edition: A Room of One's Own and To the Lighthouse. They are absolutely beautiful books and I'm really looking forward to re-reading all of them. I am very hopeful that Vintage Classics might continue and republish all of Virginia Woolf's novels.

I realise that I didn't appreciate Virginia Woolf when I was younger. I simply didn't understand what she was trying to achieve.

I remember a train journey with a friend when we were both in our late teens. I was reading Charles Dickens' Nicholas Nickleby and my friend was reading Mrs Dalloway. She was chuckling, and I asked her why. I had tried reading Virginia Woolf at this point, and had found nothing remotely funny about her novels. My friend couldn't really explain, and for years I didn't bother to try again. However, when I started reading Woolf's novels again, I understood. They're not laugh out loud funny, but they are full of acute observation and subtle satire. She is poking fun at more conventional, realist novels and characters, as well as at society.

I'm delighted to have the opportunity to acquire and re-read these important and beautiful novels, and appreciate Virginia Woolf for the important novelist she is.
