Ravenstonedale

Today we drove to Ravenstonedale, a small village about 30 minutes’ drive away, to look around its church and then sit outside the King’s Head watching for red squirrels.

The church is early 18th century and has an authentic interior. There is a three-decker pulpit with a sounding board and, unusually, the box pews face each other across the nave, in the style of a college chapel. There is also a full width west gallery.

The King’s Head is in a beautiful location next to the river and beneath tall trees. It’s a perfect spot to watch for red squirrels which, although rare, are often seen here - perhaps attracted to the numerous feeding boxes dotted around. We sipped our drinks outside, enjoying the setting. It was quite windy today and I think the squirrels were keeping under cover.

We did spot one but I wasn’t quick enough with my camera. So here’s some inspiration from Beatrix Potter instead.
