Victoria Building

The Victoria Building is the original building of what was to become Liverpool University. It is built of terracotta coloured bricks and it is claimed that it is the origin of the term ‘red brick’ university - although Birmingham University, whose original buildings are also red brick, and which gained university status three years before Liverpool, disputes this.

Today the building houses an art gallery which we visited today. As well as the permanent exhibitions, there is also a temporary exhibition of the works of Turner and some of his contemporaries.
