A Day Trip to Edinburgh

We decided, at very short notice, to have a day trip up to Edinburgh. The weather has been really hot and it seemed like a good idea to head north where, we hoped it might be a bit cooler! Also we are at the height of midsummer and the longest day, so the journey home would be in broad daylight.

We left home in brilliant sunshine and 26 degrees celcius. When we arrived in Edinburgh it was 15 degrees celcius, misty and a bit drizzly. As a true Celt this was absolute heaven to me! I do like sunshine, but the last week has been extremely hot and rather clammy!

We mooched around a bit, taking in the beauty of Edinburgh. Then, by mutual consent, we headed to Topping's Bookshop. Before we started bookshopping we had cofffee in our favourite Italian café: A Taste of Italy, and then, next door, into Topping's.

We spent a very enjoyable couple of hours browsing, and left with a bagful of interesting books. All the books we purchased were new discoveries. We're really looking forward to dipping into them.

The drive home was stunning. The sun had come out by the time we left Edinburgh, and we drove through the pretty suburb of Morningside (I always think of Alexander McCall Smith's novels), through the small town of Biggar and then on, to the gently rolling hills and fields.

By the time we got home the temperature was starting to drop, and we had had a memorable Midsummer's Day.
