Cautley Spout on a Hot Day

It was so hot today, at midday it was 30° Celsius, that we didn’t feel like doing much. But a short drive in an air conditioned car seemed like a splendid idea, especially with a delicious lunch at the destination. So we chose to drive up to Cautley Spout and have lunch in The Cross Keys, near Sedbergh.

The Cross Keys is a Temperance Inn, and they serve the most delicious egg sandwiches. The eggs are supplied by their own free range hens. The Inn is set in a gorgeous location at the foot of Cautley Spout, with the Howgills all around. We sat on the Terrace surrounded by hills, butterflies and birds. The sandwiches were as delicious as we expected.

On a lintel in the Bar is a quotation from William Blake:

Great things are done when men and mountains meet.

They are not done by jostling in the street."

There certainly wasn’t much jostling today, it was very peaceful and gentle.

As we drove home, via Ravenstonedale, we passed an unexpected stone circle. The stone circle was just off the road and only six stones, but a perfect small circle. Some research informed us that it was Fell End Stone Circle.
