After a spell of very hot, mostly dry weather, we woke up to rain today. According to folklore, this means 40 more days of rain:
St Swithin's Day, if thou dost rain
For forty days it shall remain
St Swithin's Day, if thou be fair
For forty days 'twill rain na mair
Fortunately, since accurate records of rainfall were started in 1861, there have never been either 40 days of rain, or 40 dry days following 15 July. So we might still have a good summer.
