As we were visiting Shandy Hall we also spent some time in the lovely gardens. The weather was perfect and we enjoyed strolling between the shrubs and trees, at the peak of their growing season.
On our return journey we took in the magnificent ruins of Byland Abbey, established in 1135 by a group of monks who had left Furness Abbey.
