We often find ourselves at Acorn Bank’s gardens at this time of year. Its show of fruit at the end of summer is one of the best treats we know and yesterday’s was no exception. Some of the apple trees were so weighed down with large, ripe fruit that their branches were touching the ground.
On the way, we spotted a field full of sunflowers, gently nodding in the breeze. They seemed out of place this far north.
The greenery - so brightly coloured only a week or two ago - is starting to turn brown before dying back for the winter.
This year, fruit and berries are everywhere. Today we stopped in a lay-by for a picnic lunch and realised that there were two well stocked apple trees, as well as countless blackberries and some rowanberries, right next to us.
We picked some blackberries and took them home, and picked up some damsons from a wayside stall.
