The Anglo Saxon name for August was Weodmonath, the month when weeds, or wildflowers, are numerous and plentiful.
The Venerable Bede, in The Reckoning of Time (725) tells us: "Weodmonath means 'month of tares' for they are very plentiful then".
This August is no exception. There are beautiful wild flowers and weeds everywhere. Maybe the combination of the early spring, warm months and lots of rain has helped. But this year's weeds and wildflowers are especially plentiful and beautiful.
