Midway between York and Harrogate is Knaresborough, an attractive market town perched on the edge of cliffs overlooking the river Nidd - the town's name is from the Anglo-Saxon meaning 'fortress perched on the rock'. As we were in the area we went to explore the ruins of its 12th century castle - there isn't much left, but the position is superb.
