Gaia

Six months ago we went to Liverpool Cathedral to see Helios, an installation representing the Sun. Today we went to Blackburn Cathedral to see Gaia - a huge globe of planet Earth, suspended in space and slowly rotating.

Blackburn’s Cathedral is much smaller than Liverpool’s and this meant that the globe filled more space - it hits you as soon as you walk in.

Gaia was inspired by the first view of the Earth from outer space - the iconic view from Apollo 17 in 1972. We were all reminded that our blue planet is a tiny dot in millions of miles of black nothingness.
