A BMW unlike any other! The BMW Isetta was designed in Italy and manufactured under licence by BMW in Germany between 1955 and 1962. It was to be the car that saved BMW from bankruptcy following its post-war ban on producing cars; and then, when it could produce cars, the low demand for its luxury models.
The ‘bubble car’ had a unique design, with the door on the front. It managed 94 miles to the (Imperial) gallon, the first mass-produced car to achieve this, making it popular in the post-war era of fuel shortages.
The example I spotted in Manchester - outside the suitably fashionable Vivienne Westwood store - has been fully restored by the proud owner and now sports tan leather upholstery.
