What to Look for in Winter

Recently I've been following a blogger who posts about art in old Ladybird books. As a child I didn't read many Ladybird books, so I was unaware of some of the artists who contributed to these pretty, and often informative, little books.

I was particularly interested to discover that C F Tunnicliffe illustrated all of the What to Look For books. So, in keeping with seasonal living, I purchased What to Look For in Winter. This is such a lovely book and as well as the illustrations, which are exquisite, it is also incredibly informative.

As we’re in February now, I am enjoying the description, and illustrations of Winter moving into early Spring. “When we see the hazel catkins turn yellow, we know that Spring is not far off. The catkins, sometimes called lambs’ tails, are a drooping string of small flowerlets….”

On a recent walk we were noticing catkins as well as early snowdrops. There was also evidence of some trees starting to come into bud.

I’ve just found an early edition of What to Look For in Spring, and will enjoy exploring early signs of Spring over the next few weeks.
