Today is the Spring Equinox.
In Old English it was called the “lenctenlice emniht”, the “even-night” of lencten, Spring, the season when the days are lengthening. After the equinox (as Ælfric puts it) “ðæs dæges lencge oferstige þa niht”, the day's length overtakes the night.
