We were so glad that we had taken a step outside our comfort zone. The music was sublime, there is simply no other word for it.
The Bloomsbury Players are fantastic performers and, as well as the expected violins, viola and cello, the ensemble includes a bassoon, clarinets, double base and a natural horn. The natural horn is a fascinating instrument, having no valves and only playing the naturally occurring notes of the harmonic scale.
The programme included a number of new arrangements of Schubert’s songs, these are works that inspired his instrumental chamber music. These were performed alongside excerpts from his string quartets Rosamunde and Death and the Maiden.
After the interval we enjoyed Schubert's Octet in F major, D. 803.
What a splendid evening of musical entertainment. We will definitely be seeking out more Bloomsbury Players' events. As well as being superb musicians they were also interesting, informative and so smiley and friendly.
A very lovely Bank Holiday Sunday. St Anne's Church was also the perfect venue with wonderful acoustics.
