A Midsummer Night’s Dream - William Shakespeare

Paul Hardy (1862 - 1942) A Midsummer Night’s Dream

I dreamed a dream upon a summer night -
Methought I wandered on a silent shore,
Where the sea seemed to sleep for evermore
Under the lustrous stars - or in the light
Of a full moon, which silver'd ev'ry height,
And cliff and crag. And now a song stole o'er
The waters, wailing; and eftsoons a roar,
Like choral voices mingling in their might,
Wond'ring, I climbed upon the glitt'ring rocks,
And looked around. It seem'd that spirits sang -
When, lo! the mermaidens, with fair locks
Of pearled hair. Again the voices rang
In one grand dying cadence o'er the sea,
Like Eve's last Eden song, with seraph's symphony.
