Steven Osborne - Schubert

Saturday was a day full of music! Our first destination was Levens Hall for piano recital by Steven Osborne. Steven Osborne is considered to be one of the finest Schubert pianists of today, so we couldn't resist the opportunity to listen to him playing Schubert's late piano sonatas.

The recital was in the Great Hall at Levens, an absolutely stunning venue, with excellent acoustics. Steven Osborne played Schubert's Piano Sonata in C Minor (D958) and Piano Sonata in B flat (D960), as well as a number of other pieces from the last years of Schubert's life.

It was a truly amazing experience, sublime music in a beautiful setting. I felt inspired to purchase some Schubert piano music to play at home. I've never really played Schubert, or indeed listened to much of his music, preferring earlier composers like Handel and Haydn, but this concert has really whetted my appetite for more.
