Brougham Hall and Beatrix Potter

As we were strolling around Brougham Hall, we spotted a bench with a small plaque which read “what a beautiful place to be”. The plaque states that the bench is in memory of Bea Marnell, Lady Brougham.

I was surprised, as I had no idea that Brougham Hall has a connection with Beatrix Potter. A little research when we got home uncovered the facts. Beatrix Potter's brother-in-law, Arthur Heelis, was the rector from 1920 - 1922. Beatrix was a regular visitor to the Hall, on one occasion she gave Eileen Brougham a copy of The Tale of Peter Rabbit.

At the moment I can't find out who Bea Marnell is, but I will continue to dig deep. Also is the the plaque a quote from Beatrix Potter or someone else?

Certainly the view from the bench is very lovely and the Hall is, indeed, "a beautiful place to be".
