Borwick Hall

Borwick is a nearby village and Borwick Hall is at its centre. With a 14th century pele tower, most of the building was constructed in the 16th century. The hall was in private hands but fell into disrepair more than once, ultimately passing to the county council after the Second World War.

Today it is an outdoor education centre, making it closed to the public most of the time. However, we spotted one of its rare open days and went for a nosey.

The hall’s interior is in quite poor condition after decades of misuse by generations of school children. But the exterior is classic late medieval hall, quite similar to nearby Levens Hall. In fact, Pevsner believed that Borwick was architecturally superior to Levens.
