Halegmonath (Holy Month): The English monk and historian Bede recorded in his 8th-century treatise, On the Reckoning of Time, that the Anglo-Saxons called the lunar month corresponding to September Halegmonath, meaning "Holy Month".
While Bede did not document the specific pagan rituals that made it holy, it was intrinsically tied to the turn of the season. It is believed that the Autumn Equinox made the month special, and that it was a period heavily dedicated to religious offerings, gratitude, and community rituals centred around the successful gathering of the Autumn harvest.
The Autumn Equinox falls right in the middle of this "holy month"—on September 23rd. This marks the exact cosmic transition point when day and night are of equal length before the Northern Hemisphere tilts into the darker half of the year.
It's lovely to mark the transition from Summer to Autumn and, after this year's very warm Summer, I'm really looking forward to the cooler days of Autumn.
