Round Ullswater

Our Saturday afternoon included some time round Ullswater, one of our favourite lakes.

We started in Pooley Bridge at the lake’s northern tip. Verey Books never disappoints and we came away with a nice selection.

The drive along the lake’s northern shore is stunning at any time of year and the afternoon light was perfect, although driving into the low Sun isn’t ideal on narrow, twisty roads. As soon as we left Ullswater we were onto the Kirkstone Pass, recently reopened after being closed for several months after a landslip. The repaired and re-surfaced road is a big improvement and we were over the top and down the other side to Windermere in no time. And we only met one (full size) bus on the journey, making us reverse about 30 yards so he could pass.
