A friend is a regular in Stockport Operatic Society and every year they create an excellent production, always staged at the delightful Stockport Plaza, a beautiful Art Deco theatre.
Over the last few years we have seen a number of musicals which we wouldn't normally choose, but we have thoroughly enjoyed them. We were quite excited about this year's performance of Chess.
Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Cold War, two chess champions battle for the ultimate prize: the World Championship title. However, the real game is fought off the board, as a woman, caught between them, becomes the queen in a high-stakes triangle of love, betrayal and political manipulation.
With music by ABBA's Benny and Bjorn and lyrics by Tim Rice we hoped that this would be a musical we would really enjoy. Sadly this wasn't the case. We found the production disappointing and frankly, rather strange. Lots of loud and rather tuneless music and chaotic dancing. There were some standout performers and excellent singing, but overall this really wasn't for us.
